The month of May is for celebrating Mother's Day. Not generally as busy as Valentine's Day, Mother's Day is still a very busy weekend for us florists. Particularly this florist, who decided to host my first ever and hopefully annual, Mother's Day Flower Arranging Workshop and High Tea on Saturday 13th, 1 day before Mother's Day! "Am I taking on too much?" I asked my dear Mum, who helps me out every Mother's Day.
The workshop was held in a little unknown venue, Thyme Square Cafe in Hornsby. Which is a delightful place to dine for breakfast, lunch or dinner and now for afternoon tea!
18 eager participants joined us for the afternoon workshop. The workshop included all flowers and materials used to create two designs. A lovely yet relaxed table setting featuring a flower jar arrangement. Then transforming those flowers into a beautiful flower crown. Plus the venue provided a delicious high tea! All this for a very reasonable price with booking fee's being donated to the Hornsby Kur-ring-gai Women's Shelter.
Before and after.
Learning the art of flowers does not mean its going to be neat and tidy experience! However, we managed in the end and the students created some amazing jars of flowers. Each having their own individual style and flair.
"Beautiful Chaos", one student said. I think that's a good thing?! My studio takes on a beautiful chaotic appearance most days!
Now onto the flower crown designs and that delicious high tea! This is when the real
concentration takes place. A lot of focused faces. "We want to get it right!" Perfection comes with practice, believe me! The first ever time you learn something, you may not achieve exactly what you had planned to. Especially with flowers, where you are bound to come across some issues, usually breakages. Flower crowns are somewhat more fiddly then flower jar arrangements. Once again though I was very impressed with the outcome.
The high tea, Thyme Square Cafe provided was scrumptious! I only wish i had more time to sit and enjoy it. Truly a mouthwatering experience, I highly recommend a visit to sample their food.
Helen with her two designs complete - flowers in a recycled jar and a pretty flower crown to match. Helen came to the workshop with her Daughter and her two Grandchildren. What a great way to spend the afternoon with the family. A proud and happy student and Mother.
It was such a fabulous afternoon of fun with florals. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the lovely ladies and sharing my knowledge. I look forward to hosting more workshops in the future and to the Mother's Day workshop becoming an annual event.
After my busy afternoon, the day was not over. I had to return to my studio and finish my flower orders for the next day!
